Thrifty fashionistas headed to Primark in their droves over Christmas with sales at the low-cost clothes chain up 19%.

Primark lured shoppers over Christmas with cheap fashion choices

Parent company Associated British Foods (AB Foods) said the strong year-on-year figure reflected an increase in selling space.

Sales were particularly strong in the UK and Spain.
"First quarter sales were 19% ahead of last year reflecting the increase in retail selling space and very good like-for-like sales growth, particularly in Spain and the UK, although sales in Ireland are seeing the effects of economic recession," AB Foods said.

Overall sales growth for the group as a whole stood at 17%.
The London-based company markets Silver Spoon sugar, Twining tea and Ovaltine drinks.
AB Foods said it expects good revenue growth and a significant rise in operating profits in the year to September 2010 and is confident of a good rise in earnings.
The group, which is 55% owned by the family of chief executive George Weston, was reporting its first quarter sales which covers the 16 weeks to January 2.
"Trading results for this period were very encouraging and ahead of our expectations... We expect good revenue growth and a significant increase in operating profits this year," AB Foods said.
Fellow value clothes and homewear retailer Matalan this week celebrated a 13.7% rise in like-for-like sales over the festive period.

A 'cheap chic' fashion supermarket could be opened by Tesco in a major challenge to Primark and Topshop.
The supermarket has been tempted by the success of Primark, which has reported a 7per cent surge in sales over the last four months compared to a year ago.
It is understood the company is looking to open a first flagship store of 6,000 square feet under the name of its F&F clothing label, which was previously known as Florence & Fred.
The details were let slip in comments by the former head of clothing at Tesco, Terry Green, who is now a consultant to the chain.
He told fashion industry magazine, Drapers: 'We're looking for a store in the West End as a flagship for F&F. It will be a one-off to showcase the brand and complement our online and supermarket offer.'
However, it appears Mr Green may have jumped the gun, for the company subsequently refused to confirm the plans.
The chain has made a huge success of extending its brand beyond bread and baked beans into home entertainment, furniture, electrical goods and banking.
Clothing and fashion are also becoming a much bigger element of its larger stores and industry experts can see the value of opening specialist outlets.

Some consumer are questioning the ethics of Primark, if we aren't paying a high price, someone must be. This fortunately is not the case with Primark. They have a strict code of conduct in line with United Nations regulations that every supplier and their contractors must follow. They manage to keep low prices by producing lots of easy pieces and ordering in huge quantities.
The collections are trend driven but also have great basics. Two pairs of black fishnets for £3 are practically unheard of in London. The shoe department has an amazing range of flat strap sandals all for less than £10.

Sad to say, this was the best retail therapy I have had since I bought the D&G black patent peep toes (yes! the studded ones!) which go perfectly with the £18 sequinned mini dress. I am planning my next trip in the next few days.

Who knows what I will end up with; all I know is that I will be the first one through the door. Here are some Primark products.
